Sawdust News December 2022

A Message from Mike

Carteret Public Schools in NJ initially partnered with Maplewoodshop to offer woodworking at its afterschool program at the middle school. It then added a woodworking elective course at its junior high school.

As a thank you to all the brave teachers, we are making donations to Donors Choose to give back to the classroom.

We doubled in size this year and for some fun highlights (how many tool chests did we ship?) please see our 2022 year in review.

Kind regards,

Mike

“We were looking to add a more hands-on class for students who are more tactile learners and woodworking fit perfectly. It was important for us to listen to students about what they wanted to learn and also provide more opportunities for career-based learning.”

The Orange Pencil Award

Congratulations General Sherman Junior High School!

The December recipient of the Orange Pencil award is General Sherman Junior High School! Located in Lancaster, OH, 7th and 8th Grade students at General Sherman participate in woodworking as one of their elective classes. General Sherman utilizes Maplewoodshop to target academic needs, social emotional skills, and build community in their school. They have removed stigmas and stereotypes by creating learning opportunities for all students, from all interests to engage collaboratively in woodworking. Congratulations to General Sherman for their amazing work!

The November recipient of the Orange Pencil award is JHS 190, Russell Sage. Located in Queens, NY, JHS 190 Russell Sage is a diverse collaborative school community dedicated to achieving academic excellence for all students. Students in grades 6 -8th grade participate in woodworking weekly. The school utilizes Maplewoodshop to expose students to hands-on building as part of their rotating enrichments options to get students to work with their hands and give them exposure to other opportunities for future employment. Students at JHS 190 have and continue to learn through woodworking. Last month, students were featured on CBS New York to showcase their program and their accomplishments.

Maplewoodshop: Carteret Public Schools Case Study

Carteret Public Schools in NJ initially partnered with Maplewoodshop to offer woodworking at its afterschool program at the middle school. It then added a woodworking elective course at its junior high school. With the positive impact the district was seeing at the middle and junior high school levels, and the district’s interest in providing different types of learning at the high school level, it expanded its partnership with Maplewoodshop and the Eastern Atlantic States Carpenters Funds to introduce carpentry to students at Carteret High School.
