A Message from Mike

I grew up watching Bob Ross and Norm Abram patiently explain how to do magical things with paint and tools. Turns out that went deep into my psyche and I am grateful to be able to similarly make woodworking accessible to so many.

Enjoy our little Halloween videoed to my hands and to each of you. And I wish the same for you!

Far more importantly, please check out our new blog on Fine Woodworking. In our first post, we share the impact that Camden's Promise Charter School is having on high schoolers via the Carpenters Union 16 credit pre-apprenticeship program.

You can see the program in action in this video.

Did you know?

There are wonderful math, leadership, and career programs available nationwide via the Teaching with Small Boats Alliance (TWSBA)? Across 24 states and Canada, this collaboration of educators and programs teach math, science and other essential skills through the process of boat building.

Our CEO attended their conference earlier this month and was amazed at the creative and age old techniques various organizations were using. Our modern classrooms can greatly benefit from this wisdom and we are working to incorporate facets into our program as well as share our approaches with their members.

If you live near a major body of water, please see if there is an organization near you.

Funding Sources

How can you diversify your funding sources? One way is to tap into Department of Labor funds that pay for training. This bipartisan measure reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV) and continued Congress’ commitment in providing nearly $1.4 billion annually for career and technical education (CTE) programs for our nation’s youth and adults.

For many states, this funding goes down to 5th grade!

The Orange Pencil Award

Sometimes you find a school that is not a customer but so impressive that you want to share them with the world. That school is The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School.

This public middle and high school in Brooklyn brings the waterfront to the students and vice versa. They are training youth to become the next generation of marine stewards combining ecology, such as the Billion Oyster Project, and commercial workforce development, such as welding, diving and other marine trades.
