NJBUILD CARPENTRY WORKSHOP
for women and minorities in construction.

In July, 90 young individuals aged 18-24 dedicated their efforts to achieving a construction certificate, earning 3 college credits, obtaining OSHA 30 certification, along enhancing their math and soft skills.

Within the NJBUILD CARPENTRY WORKSHOP for Women & Minorities in Construction program at the Newark Workforce Investment Board, participants in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) engaged in a two-week construction learning session and a subsequent two-week OSHA regulations training.

Maplewoodshop collaborated with the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters to enlist union carpenters as instructors, partnered with Barringer Arts High School construction students through the Newark public school system to serve as teaching assistants and received support from Big Picture Learning and Harbor Freight Fellows to provide stipends to the teaching assistants.

The carpenters and teaching assistants underwent training by Maplewoodshop to guide beginners, prepared four vacant conference rooms, and provided all necessary materials to craft items such as a tool tote, a bookcase, a step stool, and other projects showcasing tool proficiency.

We take pride in facilitating this extensive temporary workforce development initiative and express gratitude to the mayor’s office and esteemed attendees at the graduation ceremony, including Deputy Mayor Rahaman Muhammad, City Council President LaMonica R. McIver, Council Member at Large Min. Louise Scott-Rountree, North Ward Council Member Anibal Ramos, and State Senator Teresa Ruiz.

We eagerly anticipate assisting youth in Newark in exploring upcoming opportunities in the months ahead.

Please watch the video on the power of human collaboration in the form of youth exploring careers in construction.
