A Message from Mike

To start, whether you are 'brat' or 'demure' or the next word of the week, woodworking is for everyone.

This month we are very proud to share the results of a novel workforce development program in Newark and the launch of several new high school Pre-apprenticeship programs across NJ. We have many updates to the program in store including ramping up a Maplewoodshop PLC (professional Learning Community), tool and project assessment as well as math integrations.

PLUS, we are ramping up relationships with Skills USA and other organizations to help your students grow and thrive.

Please write me at mike@maplewoodshop.com if you would like to be a part of our PLC and I will send you details.

Did you know?

Woodworking to teach math! Something to ponder as you start up your school year.

The curriculum guide below by the CA State Dept of Education, one of 15 volumes written for field test use with educationally disadvantaged industrial education students needing additional instruction in the basic skill areas, deals with helping students develop basic mathematics skills while studying woodworking.

Addressed in the individual units of the guide are the following topics: using a ruler, calculating the greatest number of cuts from hardboard, calculating frame length in cabinetmaking, figuring board footage, figuring the cost of hardwood lumber, figuring the cost of finishing materials, doing lattice multiplication, and using fractions and decimals in the wood shop. Each unit contains some or all of the following: a discussion of the major concepts of the technique being covered, instructions to the teacher concerning the use of the given technique, suggested related activities, student instructions, a student assignment, supplemental activities, and one or more worksheets. A basic skills checklist and a basic skills verification form are also provided to assist teachers in identifying those students who require additional help with basic skills.

Program Updates

This summer, we were busy helping 90 18-24 year olds start on a pathway in collaboration with the Newark Workforce Development Board, the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, and the Newark Public School system.

Completers were able to earn 3 college credits, gain their OSHA 30 certification and hone math and soft skills.

Watch this short documentary or read about it on NJ ROI.

The Orange Pencil Award

We are so proud of what the Newark Workforce Development Board was able to accomplish and we are thrilled that we could help transform empty meeting rooms into woodshops in an hour per room. Their creative use of space, human talent, and outreach is a model for other career exposure programs nationwide. Congratulations!
